We hope Scouts, parents and leaders will hit the ground running when you arrive at ScoutQuest100 and not quit until Sunday afternoon. The Friday night program committee is working with institutions in Forest Park to provide some great opportunities for our Scouts. All have agreed to provide special programs and extended operating hours for our Scouts. These programs are still in development and subject to change so check back often for updates. Here's what we have so far:
The Missouri History Museum: Here you will find an amazing collection of historical items that will both inform and intrigue you. The Museum has agreed to extend their hours until 8:00 p.m. We are pleased that during ScoutQuest100, you can experience 2000 years of Vatican art and history presented through extraordinary artists such as Michelangelo and Bernini. These objects mark some of the most significant moments in the history of the papacy and the Vatican. There is a fee to view the Vatican Splendors exhibit. At 5:00 p.m., 6:00 p.m., and 7:00 p.m. in the Auditorium, a special half hour presentation of "The Saint Louis Fire" will be presented for Scouts. Check the museum's website for specifics.
The Saint Louis Science Center: Explore more than 700 free, hands-on exhibits on space, structures, environment, aviation, technology, and more. Nominal fee for the James S. McDonnell Planetarium's Space Station experience and special traveling exhibits. All free tickets for the OmniMax shows are now distributed. In addition, The Science Center will be extending their hours until 9:30 p.m.
Saint Louis Astronomical Society: Weather permitting, the telescopes of the SLAS will help scouts explore the many wonders of the universe. If the skies are clear, we should be able to see Mars, Saturn and a host of other celestial sights with little light interference from the moon.
The Saint Louis Art Museum: The Fine Arts Palace of the 1904 World's Fair is among the leading art museums in the country. Collections range from ancient Egyptian to contemporary art. Special exhibits are held throughout the year, including during ScoutQuest100. Think an Art Museum may be boring? Not this weekend. You’re in for a real treat; the Museum isn’t just pretty flowers and portraits of old people. You’ll have a chance to see their large collection of armor and ancient weapons, masterpieces depicting life in the Old West, historic battles fought in ancient and modern times and well as some of the most ferocious animals the earth has ever seen. When was the last time you saw a mummy on a Boy Scout camp-out, well the Museum has one and you’ll be able to see a real mummy in person. The Art Museum is not to be missed during this great weekend. A “scavenger hunt” has been organized to guide the Scouts through the museum and to make sure they see all the highlights. Scouts will enter the Museum through the main entrance. Head straight for the Information Desk, show your wristband and pick up the “Scavenger Hunt” directions. Once you’ve found all the art pieces and written down their location, return the sheet to the information desk for your “award”. The café on the second floor will be open with a limited menu of soda, chips, muffins, cookies, soup, cold sandwiches, and salads if you are hungry. The menu’s limited to food that we know Scouts like. The museum is under renovation, but don’t let that scare you off, that’s the mummy’s job. Make your trip to ScoutQuest 100 complete with a visit to the world reknown Art Museum, atop Art Hill overlooking the Grand Basin. The Museum will have special hours and be open till 9:00 on Friday night. The Saint Louis Art Museum will be open throughout the weekend and the “Scavenger Hunt” will be available on Sunday as long as supplies last.
The Highlands: The driving range at The Highlands (formerly Triple A Golf Course) will be open until 9:00 p.m., lit at night and available especially for Scouts. Come on over and hit a bucket of balls! The reduced price for Scouts is only $3 per bucket. Clubs will be provided. In addition, Scouts will be given a 10% discount at the Highlands Restaurant on Friday evening.
Shakespeare in the Park will be holding both a "green show" and their regular performance on Friday evening, near the Art Museum. The green show should be especially inviting for Scouts. Starting at 6:30 pm, local performers involve Scouts in juggling, magic and street performances. At 8:00 pm will be the production of Hamlet. Both are free to Scouts.
The Saint Louis Geocaching Association (SLAGA) will be conducting a night geocaching program. Bring your flashlights and be ready for a unique experience.
The Boathouse: Did you know that there has been boating in Forest Park since 1876? Did you know that there was a financial panic in 1893 and that the Saint Louis Post Dispatch conducted a campaign to raise money to expand the lake? This is the reason this body of water is called Post Dispatch Lake. Six thousand men signed up to work on the lake expansion. The new Boathouse is a year-round facility that is reminicent of Midwestern boathouse cottages in the early twentieth century. During the spring, summer, and fall boats can be rented to enable you to travel more easily to the restored Grand Basin at the foot of Art Hill. During ScoutQuest100, canoes will be available so you and your fellow Scouts can paddle around on this historic lake. As we say in Scouting, "To this you must return!" Before or after your excursion on the water, make sure to include a visit to the family friendly Boathouse restaurant where the prices are reasonable and the courteous staff will serve you some of the best food in Saint Louis. During the outdoor season, enjoy the sounds of a live band on Friday and Saturday evenings, weather permitting.
Venturers and Explorers
For Venturers and Explorers a special recognition event called "Kickin' it off with a Bang" will be held at the MUNY on the Bank of America (west) Stage from 7:00-10:00. This event will recognize a year of achievement by members of the Venturing and Exploring programs in our council. Highlights will be dancing and food. A separate reservation is required for this event, and may be downloaded here.
